Survival American English — 25 Essential Topics

The document contains all 25 topics, each color-coded by category (Transportation, Finance, Health, etc.) and structured into three sections:

  • Section 1 — Vocabulary: 10 terms per topic with clear B1-level definitions and full example sentences in context (250 vocabulary items total)
  • Section 2 — Dialogue: A realistic, extended conversation (12–15 exchanges) set in the actual situation — DMV counter, doctor’s office, bank, courtroom, etc.
  • Section 3 — Reading Article: A 5–7 paragraph informational article providing practical, real-world knowledge about each topic

Each topic is organized into three sections:

SECTION 1 — KEY VOCABULARY Ten important words and phrases related to the topic, each with a clear definition and an example sentence showing how it is used in context. Study these words before reading the dialogue or article.

SECTION 2 — DIALOGUE A realistic conversation between two or more people in a real-life situation. Read the dialogue aloud with a classmate or practice both roles yourself. Pay attention to the phrases used and the polite, direct communication style common in the United States.

SECTION 3 — READING ARTICLE An informational article that gives you deeper knowledge about the topic. The articles are written at the B1 level — clear, organized, and practical. After reading, try to summarize the main ideas in your own words.

SUGGESTED STUDY APPROACH For best results, study one topic per session. First, review the vocabulary. Second, read and practice the dialogue. Third, read the article. Then, review the vocabulary one more time to reinforce what you have learned.
