Dining Etiquette
Definition
Dining etiquette refers to the accepted rules and manners for behavior at the table during meals, whether at home, at a restaurant, or at a formal event. In the United States, dining etiquette reflects values of respect, consideration for others, and social grace. While American dining is often more relaxed than in some other cultures, there are still clear expectations — especially in professional or formal settings — around how to use utensils, interact with servers, order food, and handle the check.
Key Rules
- Wait until everyone at the table has been served before beginning to eat, unless the host specifically says to start.
- Place your napkin in your lap as soon as you sit down. Use it to gently wipe your mouth, not to blow your nose.
- Keep elbows off the table while eating. Between bites, rest your fork and knife on the edge of your plate.
- Do not talk with food in your mouth. Chew with your mouth closed and avoid making loud eating noises.
- In most American restaurants, tipping your server 18–20% of the total bill is standard — it is not optional. Servers rely on tips as a significant part of their income.
- When dining out with others, it is common to split the check or for one person to offer to pay. It is polite to at least offer to contribute.
- If you are at a dinner party, compliment the host’s food, even if it is simple. Offering to help clean up is also a kind gesture.
- Dietary restrictions are widely respected in the U.S. — it is completely acceptable to inform a host or server of allergies or preferences.
Examples
Example 1: You are at a business dinner. When your entrée arrives a few minutes before your colleague’s, you wait for hers to arrive too before picking up your fork. When she sits down, she says, ‘Please, go ahead!’ You smile and say, ‘No worries, let’s eat together.’
Example 2: At a casual restaurant with friends, the server brings the check and places it in the middle of the table. Your friend says, ‘Should we split it?’ You reply, ‘Sure, or I can just put in for what I had.’ Everyone agrees and contributes their share plus a tip.
Example 3: You are a guest at an American Thanksgiving dinner. After the meal, you say to the host, ‘Everything was absolutely delicious — especially the stuffing! Thank you so much for having us.’ Then you ask, ‘Is there anything I can help with in the kitchen?’
Extended Dialogue: Dinner at a Restaurant with a New Friend
Priya: This place looks amazing. Have you been here before?
Chris: Once, about a year ago. I remember the pasta being incredible. What are you thinking of getting?
Priya: I’m not sure yet. I’m vegetarian, so I’m looking at the options. There seems to be a good selection.
Chris: That’s great. They actually have a really popular eggplant dish. A friend of mine raved about it.
Server: Hi, welcome! My name is Jake and I’ll be taking care of you tonight. Can I start you off with some drinks?
Priya: I’ll have a sparkling water, please.
Chris: Same for me, thank you.
Server: Of course! And do you have any questions about the menu, or are you ready to order?
Priya: I do have a question — the roasted vegetable pasta, does it contain any dairy? I’m lactose intolerant.
Server: Great question! It does come with parmesan, but we can absolutely leave that off. The chef can also add some olive oil on the side if you’d like.
Priya: That would be perfect. Thank you!
Chris: I’ll have the seafood linguine.
Server: Excellent choices! I’ll put that right in for you.
Priya (after eating): This is so good. I’m really glad you suggested this place.
Chris: Right? I’ll definitely be coming back. Do you want to split a dessert? The tiramisu looks incredible.
Priya: I’d love that!
Server (presenting check): Whenever you’re ready, no rush at all.
Chris: I’ve got this one — you can get it next time!
Priya: Are you sure? I’m happy to split it.
Chris: Absolutely, my treat tonight.
Priya: That is so kind, thank you! Dinner was wonderful.
Note: Priya comfortably communicates her dietary needs, Chris is a gracious host, and both interact respectfully with their server. The tip is naturally implied in the payment.
